CALO FLAMENCO

FROM THE LABYRINTHINE CALLES OF THE GYPSY QUARTERS OF SOUTHERN SPAIN, THE ONCE-SECLUDED ART OF FLAMENCO HAS TRAVELED THE WORLD, CAPTURING AUDIENCES WITH ITS MESMERIC, HIGHLY CHARGED MIXTURE OF DANCE, MUSIC AND SONG.

CALO' FLAMENCO! TRANSPORTS VIEWERS TO THIS REALM, ELUCIDATING ITS MOODS - AT ONCE INTIMATE, PROFOUND AND DIONYSIAN.

COMBINING INTENSE PERFORMANCE TECHNIQUES AND DRAMATIC THEATRICLITY CALO' FLAMENCO! PRESENTS THE ON-GOING MYSTERY OF THIS ART AS IT EVOLVES FROM ITS TRADITIONAL ORIGINS TO A VIGOROUS CONTEMPORARY EXPRESSION.

BELOW ARE A FEW OF THE PIECES CALO' FLAMENCO PERFORMS:

  • SEVILLANAS: a group dance which is light and festive. It is popular in the nightclubs of Seville, Spain.

  • SOLEA: a dance solo, moody and expressive. The song is considered the mother of song.

  • SOLEA POR BULERIAS: the same characteristic rhythm as SOLEA, but lighter and faster.

  • TANGOS: a quick and lively dance in common time (4/4).

  • TIENTOS: a slower, more severe form of the TANGOS.

  • FANDANGOS DE HUELVA: a beautiful and elegant group dance with a slightly complex rhythm.

  • ALEGRIAS: a tricky structure with many parts from cheerful to mysterious. Made famous in New Mexico by Maria Benitez, who performs it in pants, and a hat.

  • BULERIAS: a fast and difficult piece, whether performed as a group dance, a duet between singer and guitarist, or as a guitar solo.

    • The core members of CALO' FLAMENCO are a guitar player and a dancer, Paloma. Depending on the size and length of a show, more people are added (dancers, singers, guitarists). The optimal size is usually five people: two female dancers, one male dancer, a singer, and a guitarist. Each dancer has his or her favorite solo pieces, which are accompanied by song and guitar, and there is usually a guitar solo (time permitting). Occasionally, there will be a duet between singer and guitar, without dancers. Finally there are larger group dances with two or more dancers performing all at once. The CALO' FLAMENCO cast has received the best training possible in the United States and in Spain.
